FACTUAL FRED
People like Fred are very cautious. Fred likes to get all the facts and details before he acts or speaks. Often Fred can be a perfectionist. He does not show emotion, so you may find it difficult to know what he is thinking. How can you accommodate Fredâs communication style? Fred needs to know the facts and reasons behind any comments or decisions you make. Conduct your research before you discuss any issues with Fred. Have copies of information such as documents or policies that substantiate your point of view. Doing this will ensure that Fred will be more receptive. Remember, he does not necessarily want your opinion on how something should be done, but he will respect facts that back up your request.
For example, you might have Fred as your licensor. He has told you that he does not like to see the TV on at all during child care hours. He has instituted a policy among the providers he visits that does not allow any TV watching. However, you have found an educational program that encourages social development. This month, each thirty-minute program is about sharing. You sit with the children to watch the program and then discuss what they saw and conduct activities that encourage sharing. When discussing with Fred your inclusion of this TV watching, do not say, âI think the children can benefit from watching this program.â Fred is not interested in your opinion. He might not think the children are benefiting from this program. Instead, refer to your prepared facts and any information you have copied for him. Say, âLook at these facts about the quality and benefits of this program. You can see why I am putting it into my curriculum.â
